Singer and songwriter, Vusi Nova has offered, yet another 12 track ode to love. He shares what inspired his latest album, Manyan-Nyan, (which means for real) and of course his success tips to young people.
Share what inspired the songs to your new album?
Manyan-Nyan is a continuation of what I shared in my previous album, Naninina, which gave my fans a glimpse into the details of my previous relationship with my ex. The new album is an update of where I am in my life. The message behind it is, regardless of my past pertaining relationships, I still believe in love. And what I find is that people relate to my music because my experiences are not unique to me and everyone goes through different seasons in their lives as well. Also, I wanted to make every song relatable to everyone when it comes to their love journey. What’s special about this album as well was that I featured a couple of my friends in it, such Ntando, Kelly Khumalo, Zahara and the young band, 047.

Any specific reasons for choosing the artists you worked with?
It was mainly to show unity because I believe if we stand together as artists we can make good music. Secondly, these are artists I’ve always wanted to work with. I grew up watching Ntando and we’ve been friends since 2009. Kelly Khumalo was there for me when I started out my music career, I met my first producer through her. Zahara has always been my friend, and funny enough we wrote our single, usezondibona two years ago. And 047 is a group I believe in.
How do you define success, based on your experience in the music industry?
For me, selling more than 80 000 units in South Africa, as a musician is a humbling way of defining success. But more than that, it shows that people love and relate to my music. When it comes to my career I just want to leave a legacy. I want my music to be timeless; that for me will be success.
Your advice to the aspiring musician?
I know this sounds clichéd, but education is the foundation of everything. Talent will take you to a certain level but hard work will take you far. You also, have to believe in yourself and develop a thick skin because this industry is a brutal one.
Who do you think will enjoy your album most?
Honestly, I think there’s something for everyone, regardless of your gender or your age. So the album isn’t limited to a certain group.
What goals have you ticked off this year?
I am happy where I am in my career but there’s a long way to go. Two days before releasing my new album in August I was celebrating a double platinum achievement. There’s only one goal in my life, and that is to make timeless and relatable music for everyone. That’s what I want to leave behind.

What is it about love that makes you believe in it so much?
I think I believe in love because of the love I received growing up and it’s just me sharing it with everyone around me. I believe if each person had a bit of love to give, we’d all live happily ever after.
Your success tips to every young person?
Passion goes a long way and it gets tested each day. I think that’s why people give up along the way. So stick to your passion and don’t give up no matter what. Importantly, work hard for your dreams to come true. Things work out eventually, when you put in the work.
