We have raced into the second half of 2019. Have you ticked off some of your career goals or do they seem impossible to reach? Here are 5 career goals to set for yourself this year

If, like me, you are wondering where 2019 flew to than I am glad I am not the only one. The new year always presents itself as a clean 12 chapter book from which you can script your life. We have goals, resolutions, and dreams we want to see ourselves achieve. But disappointments and challenges always make us stumble along the way. It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them, the worse thing you can do is give up. Please give your goals one more try. Here are five career goals I have decided to make the second half of this year. I hope they inspire you to do the same:

I will take on courses to further my skills: There are a lot of affordable programmes and short courses out there that will help take your career to the next level. It’s a matter of knowing where to go. I recommend two websites that are a great start. If you are into media, advertising or marketing try www.bizcommunity.com, it’s a great online portal that boosts our knowledge in the industry and it updates new job vacancies. I also recommend www.educate24.co.za/e24 as it gives short and affordable courses.

I will brush up on my CV: It’s been a while since I have updated my CV, there are a number of achievements I pat myself on the back on and I will let my CV make me shine. I also think CVs are a great way to track your career progress if you are not adding anything worthwhile to them, I suggest you start volunteering in your respective field so you can acquire more skills.

I will network my way to success: Although I have to pinch myself to do it, I have never been shy to ask for help where I need it. Industry events are a great start to find great networks. Start attending them and start making meaningful and profitable contacts.

I have to understand and sell my personal brand: We are all familiar with brands, but do you consider yourself as one? To be a known brand or an industry leader, you have to put yourself out there. Freelance for various publications in your industry, check yourself out on the internet and be sure to start using social media as a tool to educate and inform your followers.

I will not be hard on myself: I have always had this weakness, and always saw delayed goals as failures. As I am bidding my 20s farewell, I am learning to let go, do my best and learn from my experiences. The most important thing I am learning is that effort will never go to waste, I know and believe that better things are coming, it’s a matter of time and making sure that I never give up on myself, no matter how hard this journey can be.

Do you have other career goals you have set for yourelf? I’d love to hear in the comments below
