Many of us set goals that we aim to achieve at certain times in our lives. If you wonder why you haven’t achieved most of them, read on

A lot of us make New Year’s resolutions or set goals we want to achieve by the time the year ends. But most of us fall short and find ourselves giving up before we even tick off anything on our bucket list. Having goals gives us purpose because it’s human nature to want to achieve bigger and better things. If reaching your goals is just a mere dream that hasn’t turned into a reality these are the five reasons:

Your goals are not clear enough: Yes you read right, being vague about what you really want won’t get you anywhere. You have to be specific about the things you want to achieve. It’s not enough to say you want to be a business person or a CEO of a big company. You have to be clear about the kind of business you want to venture into or the kind of company you want to work for. Merge your goals with what you are good at or what you are passionate about, that will help give you a clear indication of the goals to set.

You listen to what other people say: It’s great to take advice but you have to be careful about people who always discourage you. If you really believe you can achieve your goals don’t take to heart the negative things that people say or even do. Had listened to my former boss who said I don’t have what it takes to be a writer when I started out my journalism career, I wouldn’t be where I am in my career. So block negative comments from people, even those you are close to you.

You fear the unknown: A lot of innovative and great ideas or dreams have died with people who allowed fear to discourage them from trying. Many people are not living the lives they envision because they are afraid of failing. We’ve put too much negative connotation to the word failure that we’d rather wonder how things could have been rather than working toward turning our dreams into a reality. Failure is not a dead end but a learning curve. If it was, we wouldn’t know about the many successful business people we look up to today. So don’t let fear paralyse you from achieving your goals. Rather try than wonder how things could have turned.

You want to do many things at the same time: Don’t drain your energy on trying to achieve many things at once. Focus your attention on what you really love and work towards achieving that first. Have you been warned about not being a jack of all trades and a master of none? That person knew what they were talking about. So prioritise your goals and work towards achieving each one step at a time.

You gave up: I don’t know any successful person who hasn’t experienced challenges in their lives. Life has never been a smooth sail. You will experience challenges, you will have doors slammed against your face, you will hear many no’s, you will be disappointed by people you thought had your back, you will face a lot of haters and people turning their backs on you when they see potential in you. Believe me, the list goes on and I experienced all of the challenges I have listed but it’s prayer and the end result I am envisioning that keeps me going. So don’t give up on your goals, winners don’t stop until they get what they want.

Why do you think people don’t achieve their goals?
