Publishing mogul, author, and entrepreneur Jane Raphaely is a force to be reckoned with in South Africa’s publishing industry. She shares her tips to women:

Jane Raphaely is the founder of Associated Media Publishing which publishes Cosmopolitan, Good HouseKeeping and Goeie Huishouding, Marie Claire, and House and Leisure. The Cape Town based powerhouse graced us with her presence at the Marie Claire Power Summit, where she share her inspirational message to every woman. This is what she said:

Women, you have a voice. What I want to ask you is, what are you doing with it? There’s been a huge league forward in recent times with the #metoo movement which pinpointed where the battle for women lies, thanks to amazing developments that make communication possible. These developments are an amazing gift to a publishing company such as ours because they allow women to speak with a united voice, instantly. What I would like to see is every day being a women’s day. There’s only person who can make that happen and that is you. Every day you must challenge the status quo and ask why not? Every day a woman should define what she would like to see changed. And believe it can be changed. She can argue it, she can demonstrate it, but in the end, she has to ask why not? And keep saying it, until it stops. I think this is a moment that came into my life a long time ago. I was living in England, which was also in war during the Hitler regime. Whenever people asked me what made me do what I did, I always referred back to Winston Churchill, who stated ‘Never, ever give up.’ This is a gift you can give to yourself and your children. I am proof that asking, why not, works. What I have discovered is that time is the most precious thing that a woman has because you have to do, in your time, twice what a man doesn’t have to do. And in our business, we spend a lot of time talking to stakeholders and retailers. What we are trying to do is persuade retailers to give women more time and have suggested various means to them, such as online shopping. I have learned that you can achieve more, pertaining your career when you ask why not.
