Miss Universe SA Bryoni Govender is ready to fly the South African flag high on the global pageant stage in November. We chat to her before we bid her farewell
On 27 October 2023, Miss Universe South Africa Bryoni Govender was surrounded by family, friends and media as she revealed her farewell gown and the national costume she will wear when she represents South Africa at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant, which takes place in El Salvador on November 18.
This year’s national costume is an African-Indian fusion and a celebration of @Bryoni_NG’s heritage. It was inspired by a sari and is adorned with traditional Zulu beads in a pattern inspired by an Ndebele print.

Bryoni wowed everyone as she revealed her national gown, designed by KwaZulu-Natal fashion designer Casey Jeanne. The beautiful gown is inspired by a sari and adorned with traditional Zulu beads in a pattern inspired by a Ndebele print. Govender, the first woman of Indian heritage to represent the country since Miss South Africa 1997 Kerishnie Naiker, is delighted with the national costume and believes it will allow her to shine on the international stage: “It is an accurate reflection of who I am and represents my rich and diverse cultural heritage. The fabrics, colours and design uniquely tie my two heritages together,” she said excitedly. Bryoni also talked about a cause she’ll be promoting on the Miss Universe stage and locally: Her Way Out, through which she will advocate for women’s legal rights.
Miss SA 2023 Natasha Joubert hosted Bryoni’s farewell event in her first hosting gig.
