Today, Miss South Africa 2020 Shudufhadzo Musida will be focusing on teen depression in her next #Mindful Mondays conversation to mark Teen Suicide Prevention Week

Musida has mentioned that her campaign during her reign as Miss South Africa will be mental health. Last week, she announced on Instagram that she’ll host a series that address mental health awareness, adding, “There is a profound need for us to speak on how mental health should be de-stigmatised and the more we talk about it the more we’ll learn and understand the complexities of this issue.” She started a series on her Instagram page called Mindful Mondays, which is an online mental health initiative hosted in conjunction with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group ( SADAG). She launched it on February 8 and her first guest was clinical psychologist and SADAG board member Zamo Mbele.

Her guest today is educational psychologist Elzette Fritz and the two will talk about teen depression; its causes and symptoms; are boys and girls affected differently; how does one identify the warning signs for suicide; how to start the conversation with a friend or child about depression or suicide and how does one get help if you or someone you know is thinking of suicide?

The conversation takes place on Shudu’s Instagram platform @shudufhadzomusida on Monday, February 15, from 19h00 to 20h00.

#Mindful Mondays, an online mental health initiative hosted in conjunction with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), launched last week and has already proven to be hugely successful.

Says Musida: “I want to take away the stigma surrounding mental health issues. There is nothing shameful about it. Once we start speaking about mental health, we are on our way to destigmatising it.”
