Bryoni Govender is the official South African representative at the 2024 Miss Supranational pageant and has already left Mzansi to start preparations

It will be the second time that lawyer and Miss South Africa 2023 first runner-up Bryoni Govender will represent South Africa on an international pageant stage. Last year, she made it to the top 20 of the Miss Universe competition in El Salvador and was named one of the top 10 silver finalists in Miss Universe 2023’s Voice For Change, where she spoke about her advocacy campaign, Her Way Out. Its primary goal is to advocate for women and men universally and help educate them on their legal rights. To maximise her campaign’s impact, Govender has teamed up with the Social Impact team at the global law firm, Norton Rose Fulbright, to focus on access to justice projects amongst other things. She has also been appointed as an ambassador for the public benefit organisation Lawyers against Abuse, who work to ensure meaningful access to justice for victims of gender-based violence by providing legal services and psychosocial support, empowering communities and engaging national authorities.

Bryoni has a bachelor of law degree from the University of Johannesburg and was admitted as an attorney last year.

Eight months since Miss Universe, Bryoni will be at the 15th edition of Miss Supranational—to be held in Nowy Sącz in Poland on 6 July when Andrea Aguilera of Ecuador crowns her successor at the end of the event.

She excitedly chats to KDanielles Media about the Miss Supranational pageant in which Lalela Mswane was crowned in 2022.

How have the preparations been for this global pageant?

I am incredibly excited and honoured to have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming Miss Supranational competition. I have been working tirelessly to mentally and physically prepare for the competition. These preparations have included intense training sessions to enhance my physical fitness, catwalk, poise and stage presence. I have also been working with top-notch trainers to improve my communication skills and develop a strong and impactful voice. I always say that the most important thing for me when preparing for any competition is to have a positive and healthy mindset and to put in all the necessary work.

What lessons have you learned at Miss Universe, your previous international pageantry experience?

It taught me invaluable lessons about confidence and grace. These platforms demand more than physical beauty; it’s about owning your uniqueness and embracing it. I learned to stand tall, speak my truth and carry myself with poise. The spotlight can be intimidating, but I realised that authenticity shines brighter than any spotlight. And now, as I step into the international arena once again, I carry with me the lessons learned. I know that genuineness, resilience and an honest connection with people transcends borders. Whether I win a crown or not, I’ll continue making South Africa proud. So, here’s to dreams realised, lessons learned and the magic of representing my country on a global stage!
