The 32-year-old Ezizweni hitmaker and SAMA23 nominee, Mabi Ntuli, also known as Mobi Dixon shares how he has been playing the music beats of success for ten years
What early memories do you have that sparked your interest in the music industry?
It has to be when I used to see artists like Brenda Fassie filling up stadiums in the 90s on TV.
Why did you choose the house music genre?
I immediately fell in love with house music when I first came across it in 2001 as I felt it fused different elements from different genres.
Share with us how you got into the music industry and how has the journey been?
I released my first EP in 2007 on and my first album in 2008. It was a long journey from there to the time I got into the mainstream industry in 2014 with my new brand of sound tribal soul.
What are some of the highlights and challenges you have faced as a musician?
Some of the highlights are winning the AXE DJU remix competition in 2008 and winning Best Dance Album at the 16th MetroFM Music Awards this year. Some of the greatest challenges I faced were not getting enough airplay and distribution issues over the years.
Who is your role model and why?
Black Coffee, he has flown the South African house music flag high worldwide and has made our industry respected internationally.
Who would you like to collaborate with and why?
Hugh Masekela. He is a living legend with an authentic South African sound.
Tell us about your album, Live the Music, what inspired it and how has the respond to your music been?
Live the Music is inspired by my journey and how I finally got to a place where I could live my dream and do music full time.
What are your plans for 2017?
This year I’m celebrating 10 years in the music industry and I will be releasing a documentary telling my story.
What is your advice to young people who want to make a success of themselves?
Always believe in yourself and never give up.
