The Truth or Dare hit maker, Refilwe Boingotlo Mooketsi, is one of the few young female hip hop stars who are slaying the industry. She lets us into her musical world and shares her success tips

What, from your childhood prompted your love for music, especially Hip Hop?

I grew up in Maftown (North West) where hip-hop motswako was a culture. I also went to Mmabana Cultural Centre which is the melting pot for development in arts.

Tell us how you broke into the music industry and share some of the challenges you faced?

I have been around actually. I did work with Khuli Chana, Mr Molemi, however, my break was in 2015 when I was approached by Ambitiouz entertainment and the rest is history.

What have been your highlights?

The main highlights were in 2016, where I won three Metro FM Music Awards, I also won two awards at the South African Hip Hop Awards last year, as well as a SATMA. My other highlight is doing my first Nigerian performance this year and UK Tour.

What has kept you busy since the release of 20fifi?

Performances, Radio Tours and I’ve been working on my next album.

What do you think is the misconception about the entertainment industry?

That it is for men and women can’t run things for themselves.

If you could, what would you change about the industry you are in now, especially for women?

Male dominance and giving women a voice.

Tell us about the hip hop show, Break the Beat, that you are presenting, how did that come about and what can we expect from it?

I always said in my interviews that I always wanted to present, and my previous guest presenting gigs here and there ignited the spark. I think that caught the producers’ attention, hence the nod.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

My show just premiered on SABC 1, I’m excited. I’m dropping a single from my upcoming second studio album in a week. After my Nigerian tour in April, I’m touring Swaziland and Botswana in July and hopefully Lesotho and other countries as an independent artist in a quest to continue shaping my sound and the African footprint. I want to tour the world, do more shows, and giving my fans more music.

What is your advice to young people who want to make a success of their lives, especially in entertainment?

Go to school, identify your purpose, and follow it with passion. Most of all, be you.

Catch Break The Beat, on SABC 1 every Sunday, at 18h00 PM (CAT). Over 13 weeks dancers will hustle to win the streets of Mzansi and the R100 000 in prize money.
