If getting ahead in your career is your ultimate dream that seems far-fetched, you need to read this.
Do you find yourself hard at work, giving 110% to your job but feel like it’s all for nothing? Think again because, yes your work ethic is something to be celebrated but you are going about it the wrong way. We all want to grow at some point in our lives, and getting a promotion or recognition at work is one of the ways we feel we are doing something right. If you feel it’s time to get a step ahead in the corporate ladder, here is a list of reasons you haven’t gotten that promotion (and what you can do about it)
You don’t promote your strengths and achievements: Have you wondered why some colleagues jump at any opportunity given to them or even ask for more work, ‘show off’ a great performance or target they exceeded or raised up their hands at every meeting called by management? They are not trying to annoy you but want to get ahead in their career. They understand that they are an asset to the company and are making management aware of this. Don’t be shy about your skills and the value you bring to the company, but don’t go about it the wrong way.
You haven’t acquired enough skills yet: Be honest with yourself, do you have the necessary skills that are needed to excel at your desired position? Always find ways of improving at what you do by getting mentorship from the department you want to work at, finding out the job description of that position and working towards getting the skills that are needed.
You don’t take constructive criticism: There is obviously a fine line between your boss trying to bring you down or giving you feedback on your job. Always keep it professional by not being defensive and asking for suggestions on how you can improve on your performance.
You don’t take initiative: Takin charge is a very important trait to have because thinking like an employee, instead of a leader is what makes you stuck at the same position. Before you complain about the number of years you have been doing the same thing, how have you shown that your company needs you more than you need it? If you have ideas, ask for that meeting and show leadership skills.
You don’t dress the part: Whether we like it or not, people treat us the way we present ourselves to them, from the way we act to the way we dress. Start dressing like the boss you want to be. It will make you feel good, trust me.
You haven’t asked for it: Yep, you read right. Sometimes you simply have to ask. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, take charge of your destiny by going for what you want. Present reasons you are fit for the position you want, and if it’s open, chance are you will be considered for it, especially if you have shown, through your work that you deserve to be up one step higher in the corporate ladder.
