Academy award-winning actress and beauty ambassador Lupita Nyong’o has finally published her children’s book, Sulwe, illustrated by Vashti Harrison
Kenyan-born Lupita needs no introduction as she rose to stardom in Hollywood since her debut feature in 12 Years a Slave in 2013 that won her an award. Since then she has graced other big screens with her acting talent in movies such as Queen of Katwe, Black Panther, Us and Little Monsters, not to mention renowned magazine covers beauty campaigns as the face of Lancome. The actress and producer released her new book, Sulwe, yesterday (October 15). The children’s book is about a five-year-old girl with the darkest skin colour in her family and at school. It highlights colourism, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within. According to Simon & Schuster, which published the picture book, ‘Lupita Nyong’o creates a whimsical and heartwarming story to inspire children to see their own unique beauty.’
Talking about her book on Twitter, the actress said, “Sulwe is out and in honor of her debut, I wanted to take you back to the day she was born for me. Just days before the 2014 Oscars, I gave a speech at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon. Below is her empowering speech that will inspire you to embrace your skin. The child in me already wants to read the book, as we all need a reminder that beauty truly comes from within.
