Nigerian-born Reggae and dancehall singer, Patoranking shares where his passion for music started and his success tips to young people
27-year-old Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie visited South Africa to be on the Absolut One Source stage that took place this past weekend. He chats to KDanielles Media:
How did you find your passion for music?
I grew up in a musical background. Music was part of my life since childhood so it was natural for me to fall in love with it when I was younger.
Who were your favourite artists growing up?
It was definitely Bob Marley and Fella. Since I come from the ghetto I was inspired by musicians who were unapologetic about speaking their truth.
How did your family react to your career choice in music?
At first my family, like any other African family, didn’t understand why I would consider a career in this industry, but I believe that you don’t have to see the whole staircase but just take the first step when it comes to your passion. When your family sees your drive and passion they eventually buy into it. When I started, I didn’t think that I would perform in other countries but my music is now well received globally. Moments like these, and even this interview, were things I always prayed for and I am grateful for it.
What were some of the challenges you faced breaking into the music industry?
Where I come from dancehall is not really a big genre, so I had to work extra hard to be taken seriously as an artist.
What are your success tips to young people?
Believe in yourself. Work very hard and stay away from drugs and always stay close to God.
