These 26-year-old twins are determined to heal the social ills of the world, one song at a time and their debut gospel album is promising just that
Lebone and Lesedi Khunou launched their album, Filled with Hope on Sunday 25 June 2017 in the township of Alexandra and what a blast and emotional experience I shared with other guests who attended. Every song they sang on stage welled my eyes while rejuvenating my spirit. Their names derive from SeSotho, which means The Light, a stage name they also chose for themselves. I really couldn’t wait to have a chat with them after their stellar performance on stage.
The main question I asked them was what inspired their debut album and they said, “We wanted to give people hope through this album because we can’t deny the fact that there is so much darkness and sadness in this world. We wanted our voices to bring light somehow and to assure people that God still cares. Our names are a reflection of the women we aim to be every day. We always want to leave a positive mark and brighten up the room, not only with our voices but our personalities as well.”
These young girls are juggling full-time, demanding careers at an insurance company while building a solid music career. “We feel we found our calling to make music and this is something we want to build on a long-term basis.” This is the advice they have for young people, “Don’t doubt the talent that you have because God gave it to you for a reason. Trust God, work on your craft and doors will open for you. You won’t be immune to challenges and negative people. We were also given a lot of negative feedback and we wouldn’t produce this album if we didn’t believe in ourselves. So you have to believe in yourself at all times and work hard towards fulfilling your dreams.”
Their 12- track album, Filled with Hope, has nestled in my radio for a couple of days and I sing along to some of my favourite songs, such as Ke Tshepile Jesu (I trust you Jesus) when I am on the road. It’s worth your collection and it will surely lift your spirit, as it did mine.
