Multi-award winning Lauryn Hill reminisced and celebrated on a Johannesburg stage the 20 years of miseducation of Lauryn Hill album

Thousands of fans flocked to the Ticketpro Dome to witness and sing along to Nas and Lauryn Hill’s hit songs. Hill’s debut and popular album certainly seems to transcend time as people as old as their album were seen attending the concert on Saturday, 02 February 2019. The 43-year-old multi-Grammy-winning star looked simple and elegant as she wore a black leather Kenzo cap, white tulle gown and chandelier earrings. There wasn’t a song the crowd didn’t sing along to with Hill’s raw and melodic voice. Although less theatrical and simple, Hill commanded a powerful stage presence, while dishing out inspirational and even political pearls of wisdom. Some words that stood out for me were, “We all like nice things, but if we don’t respect nature and God then they are not worth having,”.

The singer sure won the crowd, when she tried to pronounce South African dialect, such as Mzanzi (instead of saying Mzansi). She got  the crowd roaring when she gave a shout out to Zulus, Sothos, and her new favourite term, Xhosa.

Lauyn Hill also shared, “Africa has always been rich. For the community of people that I grew up around we always looked to Africa, despite the energies and messages that try to poison us against the motherland,”, “We always knew that we had a homeland and we always wanted to live honourably to respect our mother.”

Hill appeared on stage around 10 pm, just after Nas’ epic performance, and gave an hour and a half of great music. Some of the great songs she performed were “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything Is Everything,” which she received 10 Grammy Award nominations for and won five awards. She was later joined on stage by Nas with whom she performed If I Ruled the World.

Closing off the show with the Fugee’s smash hit, ready or not, the legend, who seemed to not want to leave the stage requested to see her fans with the lights on.

Promising to come back to SA, Hill proved, yet again why she’s a legend worth gracing Mzansi’s stage yet again.
