Award-winning South African hip-hop artist and businesswoman, Nomuzi Mabena shares where her passion for music comes from and her success tips to young people
Moozlie, you have had a successful career in the music industry, what sparked your passion for it and how has your experience been in the entertainment industry?
I think all human beings are intrinsically passionate about music, whether you make music or listen to it. Being human and having a heartbeat means I absolutely love music. But I must say that after being in the television industry for a while, I wanted to express myself differently and I felt that hip-hop was the best way for me to do that. And it’s been a really interesting journey; I really love being one of the few pioneers for females in the South African hip-hop industry.
How do you define success and do you feel you have achieved it?
I think I am pretty successful. But what I do find is that after I reach a new goal I am already trying to get to the next one. Sometimes, we forget that we are in moments that we prayed about. So, I am grateful for what I have achieved, but I am always striving for more.
Describe your busiest day
Everyday is different, but I think anytime where I can share the story of the industry that I am in and the people that are part of my industry keeps me going and excited.
Who were some of the people who have helped you reach the success that you enjoy today?
I am surrounded by people who do incredible things for me all the time. The first person who comes to mind is my manager Sbuda. He helped me start my own record label, which had never been tapped into before at that time. Everyday, I am collaborating with people, and partnering up with people who help me enhance and get to the next level. It’s an exciting time to be part of this industry.
What can we expect from you in 2020 and beyond?
There are a lot of exciting things that are happening for me next year, the exciting one is that I am going to drop a new project that I had been working on. I am also going to continue with the S&M Edition, so there’ll be a lot of fashion and shoes!
What are your success tips to young people?
My advice is don’t be afraid to look crazy for your dreams. A lot of the time, things don’t make sense to the people who are watching and they won’t make sense to you as well, but keep going and keep pushing. Never get comfortable. Be your own biggest fan; that is what’s going to take you to the next level.
