The New Year brings with it new hope and a clean slate. To make 2020 your best year yet try to invest in these seven things:

It’s been a while since I made New Year’s resolutions. To me, they seemed redundant, because I either stopped living up to them or even forgot what I promised myself I would stop or start doing. Instead, I decided to make each day meaningful to me in every aspect of my life. I made it a point to do my best each day, instead of waiting for another year to do that. But this year, there are seven things I want to invest in for my well-being, health and happiness. I hope they will inspire you too:

  • Further your skills: I have delayed in furthering my studies for a while. And while there have great excuses on the book that I could come up with for not upskilling myself, I have realised that I am not doing anyone a favour by not ticking off my goals. I have decided to go back to school to further my studies, no matter how busy life has become. I know it’s a great investment my future self will thank me for.
  • Invest in financial literacy: I love money. I love it when my bank account fills up with a few hundred Rands. This year, I am making a point to invest in financial literacy, finding ways to not only make extra cash but also investment options I can afford.
  • Press the delete button: Sometimes, your well-being is set back by the people in our lives we feel guilty cutting out. This year, people who do not contribute to my well-being and growth have no place in my life. I would rather have a small circle of people I can rely on and who can also count on me, then have fake friends.
  • Exercise more: This is one part of my life that I feel guilty about, I hardly exercise no matter the great benefits I know about. This year, I aim to take baby steps in being fit.
  • Live a healthier lifestyle: Beyond being fit, I aim to eat healthier and listen to what my body really needs. Being healthy shouldn’t be boring or expensive, which is an excuse I have also made, it’s about a mindset, which I want to shift to a healthier direction.
  • Invest in your overall well-being: This includes your spiritual well-being, as well as resting more. As much as it is important to work hard to achieve the goals and results you want, it’s important to rest and do things that make you really happy.
  • Give back to the community: If you think you have it hard, just look around you. There are people who are really suffering and organisations that need help in bettering the lives of the less privileged. This year, I will make an effort to give back to causes that mean a lot to me. I hope you will too.
