The festive fever comes with the temptation to splurge all your hard earned cash, especially if you are lucky enough to get a bonus this year. Here are five ways you can be smart with your money this holiday

If you are one of those lucky people that will get the 13th cheque this year many of your peers will be green with envy. It’s a fact that not everyone gets a bonus, and depending on your relationship with money, it’s worse that you will probably get your salary mid-month- stretching January longer. But many of us have learned the hard way that it’s important to be smart with your money, especially during the December holidays, that come with the urge to shop until we drop to cents in the bank and in our purse.  Make this year different by spending your money on these five things:

Prioritise your debts: From your store accounts to paying off your tuition fees. Make use of your bonus by paying that extra amount to what you owe. It’s not a fun thing to do but if you think about it getting debt off your back is one of the best financial gifts you can give to your self.

Put away extra cash to your savings accounts: Whatever financial investments you have opened, saving more means yielding more returns. Adding a few hundred Rands to your accounts will sure widen your smile when in the long-term.

Spoil your parents: Parents talk. They always voice their wishes and if your bonus can afford that new fridge your mother really wants or those new car seats your dad mentioned a few times treat them to a gift they will never forget this year.

Reward yourself: If a weekend getaway, getting a new phone or indulging in a shopping spree was your bucket list, then use some of your bonus to reward your hard work, especially if you were disciplined with your finances this year.

But don’t fall into January blues: 2018 is only two weeks away, and with it comes fee increments with some of our financial responsibilities, from insurances to car installments. Make sure that you put away whatever amount that you will need to get through January and all it takes is discipline.

By now we should know better than letting the festive highs cloud our financial judgment. Having a budget and sticking to it, no matter the time of the year will give you less headache and financial stability, which should be everyone’s priority.

How do you spend your bonus?
