Here’s How To Sustain Your Marriage As A Business Person

Married entrepreneurs have a lot going against them. Building a business from the ground up requires a lot of time, energy, and finances. This can put a strain on a marriage. Here’s how to curb that

Here’s a heads up when it comes to tying the knot. The average marriage has a success rate of about 50-60%. This means that 40-50% of marriages end in divorce. While statistics aren’t available, you can assume that this number dips even lower for those who are married to an entrepreneur. This is a sad fact for those looking to stay in wedding bliss for the rest of their lives.

What’s more, losing time with a partner can begin to damage the couple’s emotional and physical connection. While many cases of business people don’t have a happy ending when it comes to their marriage, not many give advice on how to prevent this from happening.

These are 6 ways entrepreneurs can sustain their marriages.

Leave Work at the Door

This can be difficult, especially when you are working for yourself. Because you do not have a firm 9-5 work schedule and your cell phone is just a swipe away, it’s easy for work to creep in at all times of the day.

Not following a set schedule for work can have a negative effect on your marriage. A spouse may end up feeling ignored, unloved, and unappreciated.

Part of leaving work at the door means putting your phone away so that you can give your spouse your undivided attention. A study conducted by Baylor University polled 308 students and found that 46.3% felt that they were being ignored by their partner while their partner was using an electronic device.

Cell phone addiction is very real. One study highlights that 1 in 10 couples admit to checking their cell phones during sex.

Set Non-Negotiables

As an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get wrapped up in your business life. You want to hire employees, grab investors’ attention, and grow your business. But it’s important not to do this at the expense of your marriage.

Entrepreneurs must set non-negotiables and stick to them. Here are some examples of non-negotiables that can help strengthen your marriage:

DO: be home and done with work by 6 PM

DON’T: overwhelm your spouse with talk of work

DO: try and include your spouse in your business (inviting them to accompany you for work travel, etc.)

DON’T: take work calls after a certain time of day

DO: Make quality time for your spouse each and every day

Get on the Same Page

Couples should be on the same page about what is a considered to be a non-negotiable in the relationship. Talk openly about how realistic it is to start a family, buy a pet, go on vacation, purchase a house and pursue other personal goals.

These conversations should be open and honest so that both partners have the same mindset when it comes to planning their lives together.

Married partners can make these conversations part of a monthly ‘marriage check-in’. A marriage check-in is where couples sit down and talk to one another about the positive aspects of their relationship as well as what aspects need improvement.

Communicate Regularly

Studies show that couples who stay curious about one another have healthy, satisfying relationships. The best way to get to know each other better is to communicate regularly.

Couples benefit when they communicate openly with one another. Talking about the deeper things in life can strengthen their connection and make each other feel loved and appreciated.

Communicating is also how couples will let each other know if something is wrong with the relationship. Talking calmly, honestly, and patiently with one another will help resolve issues and prevent misunderstandings from occurring.

Have a Regular Date Night

Having a regular weekly date night gives couples an excellent opportunity to reconnect throughout a busy week. Make date night fun by taking turns planning what kind of outing you are going to have. It can be as luxurious or casual, expensive or free as you like.

There are many benefits to having a regular date night with your spouse. For a start, maintaining the schedule of a date night shows your partner that you are reliable and can be depended on.

Research conducted by the University of Virginia highlights that a date night can draw couples closer together and increase communication. It also says that the novelty of a date night can boost the relationship quality, raise passion, restore commitment, and reduce stress.

It is important that couples keep the topic of work firmly off the table during date night and stick to conversations that will bolster the relationship.

Treat Your Spouse Like a Client

This might not sound very romantic at first, but hear us out.

When you schmooze a client, you don’t just talk to them or “sell” them, you take a genuine interest in them. You are attentive, observant, eager to please, and you work hard to anticipate your client’s needs. These are the exact qualities you should have in your marriage.

If your spouse was your top client, you would do anything to make sure they were kept happy. You would give all of your time and energy to ensure they continue to be your partner.

Married entrepreneurs should never put their spouse on the backburner. In order to have a successful marriage, they must communicate regularly and spend quality time together. Regular date nights can help couples reconnect during the work-week. And most importantly, save the marriage by leaving work at the front door.
