As we are about to wrap up 2017 one should do a lot of introspection on what lessons their experiences taught them, especially in the workplace.
Starting out on a new career, either from varsity, a new city or another company can be exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. Each company has its own culture and work environment that if need be, you have to adapt to and make the most out of. Hard work, reliability and work ethic are attractive traits every employer seeks and having those are important to help you reach the top of the corporate seat. One thing I have learned from my personal experience and in my career journey is that it’s really not easy growing in your career when your environment is not conducive enough, either from your bosses, your attitude, your lack of passion or your fellow colleagues who only look out for themselves, even at your expense. Life presents many opportunities to teach you something and to help you become the best version of yourself, especially in the workplace. I don’t know about you, but these are the lessons I have learned in my career over the years and especially in 2017:
You are the only person who has the power to be who you want to be: The company you keep is very important as it can influence your character and even your future. Like family, you cannot control who your boss or colleagues might be but the great thing is that you can leave them anytime you want if better opportunities are awaiting you. Unless criticism is constructive and comes from a good place, you shouldn’t allow anyone to discourage you or bring you down. I always say that had I listened to one of my previous bosses who said I wasn’t cut out for this industry that I am passionate about, I really wouldn’t be where I am today. Don’t stop believing in yourself, especially if you have the skill and hunger to reach your goals.
No man is an island: I am an introvert and always have to pinch myself before I either raise my hand or contribute my ideas at meetings. I love my space and thrive working in solitarily. But I understand how important it is to work in a team and to learn from people who are great at what they do. Being a team player is very important, no matter how shy or quiet you are. I have learned that there is no harm in being a little bit open about who you are beyond the title you wear to work.
Resting is as important as the hustle: Hard work really doesn’t mean slaving your social life and health away. As a workaholic, I barely slept more than five hours trying to build the KDanielles Media brand this year. It really was exhausting. Resting and taking good care of your health is important if you want to live long enough to enjoy the fruits of your hard work one day.
Don’t be afraid to take risks and ask for opportunities: One of my role models and successful PR specialists, Sheila Afari always says that never say no to opportunities, no matter how challenging they seem. Always grab opportunities with both hands and ask for a helping hand where you need it. Chances are if you show initiative and hunger to succeed in your career someone is bound to notice and assist where they can.
Humility is very important: Humility can get you a long way not only in life but in your career. It means you show that you are human enough to make mistakes and learn from them. It also grounds you to learn as much as you can so you can be equipped with the skills you need to get to and stay on top.
