Mpumalanga-born entrepreneur, Alwin Mabuza shares why he is passionate about developing and grooming businesses, as well as his success tips to young people

“I generally love helping people to reach their full potential, especially in business,” says Mabuza who graduated in Business Management Science from Stellenbosch University. “I started consulting for people who have small businesses early this year, and I assist with business acumen that they usually overlook, such as advertising their services. So far I have four clients whose businesses are still operating. One of the main things I do is help develop a business strategy for each client, starting with the question why as a starting point to identify the purpose of a particular business.”

Purpose Statement

“I believe that one of the best ways to know yourself is to look at how your background shaped you. I am naturally analytical, a good teacher and have leadership abilities and I decided that studying Business was the best way to groom my skills further. I want to bridge the gap between a mediocre business and one that offers great services. I was also brought up by a loving, caring and empathising family. That made me want to extend that same care to other people. My religious community also taught me to be independent and be accepting of others.  These early moments shaped my career.”

Success Tips

“There is no formula for success. I believe that you need a set of values to stick to. The first one is that you have to understand that you are responsible for your life and success. Don’t play the blame game. Be purposeful in what you really want to achieve. Lastly, expose yourself to as many opportunities as you can because that will lead you to your purpose. Identify what you are good at and find opportunities that are in line with your skills.

  2. Your article seems to suggest that introverts struggle with leadership roles “put in a position to lead or instruct can send us into a panic” – I actually find that quite offensive. Introverts are not necessarily bad presenters, leaders or instructors, likewise, being an extrovert does not make you good at those things.
