We all know that what you say is powerful enough to make or break your career and everything in between. These are things never to say to your boss, no matter what
“If you say that you can or you can’t, you are right.” This is a simple, yet powerful saying that has challenged me to follow my dreams no matter what this year. I find this quote very powerful because deep down we all know that words are very powerful and what we say is a mirror of who we are and what we truly feel about ourselves. With this said, many of us have blurted things that we have regretted. A lot of times, some of the things we have said have driven relationships and even opportunities away. Being career driven requires a lot of skills and qualities, and the most important one that I admire is not pulling others down when climbing the corporate ladder. Although we don’t choose the kinds of bosses we work with, below are five you shouldn’t say to them, no matter how tempting:
“I can’t…” That statement is quite offensive considering that your boss tasked you with a certain opportunity because they believe in you. Never say no to opportunities presented to you, no matter how unfair you think your boss is. Give your job your best, even if its not part of your job description.
“I told you…” The last thing anyone needs to hear are those words when they didn’t achieve a certain goal. You might have thought a certain project that your boss wanted to pursue was a disaster and might have even mentioned it. But don’t create unnecessary tension with your boss with those words.
“No…” Setting boundaries is very important for your peace of mind, but watch who you are saying it to. Rather negotiate expectations from what your boss requires from you than to blatantly say no to them.

“I know what my contract says, this is not part of my job description…” This is the fastest way to the exit-for good.
“Can I get back to you later? I’m quite busy now…”Wow, that’s a bold and quite rude statement. Unless you are closing a million-Rand business deal with a big client the organisation has been trying to sign on board you really can’t be too busy to attend to your boss’ time.
