Known for his rebellious character, Themba from ETV’s Rhythm City, Sphamandla shares how his love for acting started as well as his success tips to young people

Born in Thokoza, in the East of Johannesburg the 25 year-old actor stumbled across acting when he used to accompany his older brother to rehearsals for the stage plays he partook in. He continues, “It was an art that I was drawn to and I always wondered how it could be like emulating different characters I saw on stage. It all started when one of my brother’s colleagues couldn’t make it to the play that was showcasing and I was asked to fill in his shoes. I impressed the director so much that he advised me to consider pursuing this career. So I decided to further my studies, at Fuba School of Drama and Visual Arts for a year, in Johannesburg after matriculating in 2011.

My first major television gig was the role of Gazi in Mzansi Magic’s feature film, Rise. One of the executive producers of Rhythm City was part of the crew that made this feature film. They were so impressed by my performance that they gave the role of Themba two years ago! The experience was surreal and I enjoyed every minute of it. One of the highlights of my acting career was acting with the talented stars who inspired me, especially Mduduzi Mabaso who I always looked up to. Themba’s role came to an end on 19 May 2017 but there many highlights and lessons I learned from that character, including the fact that bad choices in life always lead to bad results. There’s so much I am looking forward to this year, including building my brand and working on my production company, Double Up Productions where I want to create hit television shows, brand activations and events. I am passionate about my career and I am fortunate to have learned from the living legends I grew up watching. Another highlight that I am grateful for is winning the Best Influential Person Award this year. My advice to young people who want to make it in life is humble yourself, have patience and never give up on your dreams.”
