Start up businesses don’t have the financial luxury to traditionally market their business, but there are tools you can use to promote yourself to the market

Marketing your new business is an important way of creating awareness and promoting customer relationships. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get your name out there. This is how you can do it:

Be social: many small businesses have social media to thank for the awareness and success of their businesses. Create social media pages where you know your customers are mostly engaged in and start conversations.

Use mobile marketing: do you own a car? Great! Your vehicle can be your biggest marketing tool. Brand your car with your company logo and contact details.

Invest in a website: one of the first places your potential customers go to when seeking information is Mr Google. Invest in a basic and user friendly website that showcases your services. WordPress.com has great free and premium themes you can choose from. Hosting your domain name and website is just as important. Visit hosting sites, such as Afrihost.co.za to host your website.

Be visible to your customers: Another great way to get exposure is to feature or be featured in publications that you know your customers read. Strategically sell yourself to media houses by asking to contribute to their publication or offer an angle of an article you feel might appeal to their readers.

Attend industry events: This is one of the best ways to network and build relationships with potential clients and customers. Always have your business cards handy.

Word of mouth: next to social media, this is one of the best and totally free marketing tool you will have. Make sure you build good relationships and offer the best services that will make your customers agents for your business through positive word of mouth.

What affordable marketing tools have you used for your business?
